The Battle of Westport, also called the Gettysburg of the West, was fought on October 23, 1864, and represents one of the largest battles west of the Mississippi River; a turning point in the war and closing chapter to Confederate General Price’s 1864 Missouri raid. 30,000 soldiers were part of the engagement with 3,000 casualties. The Battle was the last major operation Confederate forces launched in the Trans-Mississippi Theater.
